League of Legends has a much larger player base, and has been around longer than Dota2(not 1). I posted a link some time ago where more people watched a LoL tourney than the superbowl or something like that.

LoL is certainly more popular but the numbers Riot gives out are skewed by multiple bots and smurfs. Twitch numbers aren't really reliable either because when there's no tournaments going LoL can still pull 100k through player streams while Dota 2 really doesn't have that big of a player stream following (unless we're talking Sing, Dendi or Dread).
The in game spectating thingy in LoL is also much, much worse. Back when I tried it you couldn't watch any other game except the one on the front page, meanwhile in Dota you can pick any game out of the first 25 pages. If you want a proper numbers compare I'd compare LCS and big Dota tournaments.
Yeah but just knowing of the steelers doesn't translate into we're watching the super bowl. Here's an article that suggests 97% of all viewers are in the US and about 100 million people watch. I'm inclined to agree with this estimate.
you can run adobe air games on a lemon with an nail and some string. Thus more people can play LoL, especially college students with laptops or people in poorer countries.
Well, my uni has a semi-official lan party this week and around the same amount of ppl wants to play lol than cod or cs, but only 4 dota2 xD and i rarely know anyone in real life who plays dota2 but would be hard to find any game friend who have never played lol:D
In my uni i am pretty sure i am the only one who plays dota, here in spain lol is way more popular :/
I know some people here playing dota, but most of them only against bots, coop bot and occisionally normal mm, I dont know anyone from real life whos playing ranked... Even the guys recruited me last summer havent played ranked yet... (Their lvl of understanding dota is that hard support is centaur couse hes "hard" = tanky, and off lane = jungle, couse you arent on lane xD)

i always thought its like 50 / 50.
but recently i noticed that on twitch at least 3x or 4 x more people watch lol than dota2. so its like 70-30 ? 80-20 ?
