what i don't understand is why they don't focus on other important features rather than implementing/wasting ressources on those joke features
imo its clear that dotabuff is facing growing competition by opendota/yasp (although probably they aren't threatened, since they don't do anything about it), yet nothing is being done to make dotabuff more attractive
@mwn - What features are important to you? What would make dotabuff more attractive to you?
This is not the only thing we have been working on and what is attractive will vary depending on what the person values. Dota is a mature game and interests shift and change over time depending on what the player is focused on. The most passionate people on our site tend to be very focused on playing the game and many of our features are oriented towards them. I am always open to hearing more feedback though.
i dont think that more than 30% of dotabuff stats are actually used for something meaningful
not dotabuff's problem though imo
i believe the biggest issue is that stats are not available for free (only for plus users) while i can go to opendota, get the same amount (or more) of stats and all of that for free
i have absolutely no idea how much the dota API offers in terms of data, but apparently it offers more than i thought - try working on actual game stats and also try to make stats more widely available - while i can understand that dotabuff as a business has interest in maintaining a "pay wall" for stats to make profit, i believe publicity (think: people sharing stats on reddit, i guess that is also what you are mainly aiming for with this feature) can make you huge profits as well - not because people pay to see their stats, but because they want to support dotabuff
i absolutely love dotabuffs design (maybe because it's the first stats website i encountered), but i think as a non-plus user, and even as a plus user, i'd use opendota 10/10 or 9/10 times for stats respectively
95% players don't know what to get from most of the stats
the rest knows better than to analyze games from stats instead of direct replay watching
nvm actually i just realized opendota has the cosmetics feature as well, i just never noticed.
@arin maybe, maybe not - regardless opendota is superior in terms of stats, be they useful or not, and u don't need to pay for them. opendota gives u heatmaps, benchmarks etc which are quite good to measure performance imo, look for example at this:
while the stats that come later are not super useful, you still got quite the cool heatmap, you can see how much gold you earned in ur lane, how many lhs/denies u got at 10 etc.
i'm not sure wether anythign has changed for plus users though, it's quite some time since i have used plus
also it's less about implementing the cosmetics feature itself rather than the fact that you could use the server capactiy to implement other features
thanks for the feedback. Server capacity is less of the issue, especially with a feature like this that can be segregated from other data. It's more about the time it takes our team to implement things. And if the feature we add is actually going to be used. It's very easy to add more stats, but we like to design them to both be used and be useful. Our site is an ongoing, living thing and not every stat we add will improve it. But we're focused on measuring and learning as we go.
This feature is a bit different from a lot of the other things we've done (or anything else available). So for us it's absolutely an experiment. We're listening to the feedback and seeing how it will be used before deciding to invest more into it.
not to mention that dotabuffs main purpose is to offer stats for its users, same as opendota - i think stats shoudl be free and you should expand the possibilities plus gives to make the user feel more bound towards this website, think of something like a stats showcase on your profile, a custom color/badge in the forums, a post counter (a bigger forum in general), more links to websites (vk.com, weibo ...), ...
the possibilities are endless. hmu on steam if u are short on programmers, id be happy to work even without salary lul
Honest question: if we offered all stats for free would you buy plus just to support us? Do you support opendota?
i used open dota just for allchat to point out flaming rustards
dotabuff allowing that to non-plus users eliminated that need
yes and no, let's say it like that
in the long run it comes down to what dotabuff offers to its users in comparison to opendota - opendota is (as far as i am concerned) open source and thus has a completely different approach to their accounting (?), since their "monthly goal" is at 100$/month
the reason why i have not (yet) spent money to support their website is because i'm still a minor for a few months and therefore don't have paypal, additionally, donating gives me nothing except, quoting, "be at the top" (apparently its at 50+$ right now for the donation leaderboards), "cheese your profile" and "feel good about yourself"
if you worked on your dashboard, or as i've previously mentioned, ways to customize your profile/forum appearance, i'd sure as hell see myself paying for dotabuff+/donations
i'd even go as far as saying that you should not abolish dotabuff plus, it's cool, but the essential things should be free (here: stats), while plus should give u "the cherry on top"-dotabuff experience
also it more or less comes down to your business i guess, how many people you employ etc to even consider the move to go full-free, something that nobody of us can judge
what amount of users would but db+ if it was only "the cherry on top"? not many, at least compared to how many ppl get plus now
don't compare yasp to db - one is an opensource project with no income for it's creators, the other is an actual commercial company with employess that need to be paid and is probably a primary or a major income source for its owners. db won't survive on the same system as yasp
what amount of users would but db+ if it was only "the cherry on top"? not many, at least compared to how many ppl get plus now
maybe, maybe not
different people have different intentions for buying dotabuff plus, i myself don't see me paying for dotabuff plus because it offers me nothing special - i can get my stats elsewhere and the only thing that dotabuff plus would give me are the hero rankings (which are more reliable). maybe people pay for dotabuff plus because they don't know about opendota, maybe they buy it to support the site.
anyway, the only reason why im still using this site is because i made friends in this forum and still like posting here, ocasionally i look up stats of the people i play with and rarely ever my own ones
clearly, for you, buying dotabuff plus for "the cherry on top" is not an option, maybe also because for you as a russian the price is comparatively high than for someone who lives in the west and can easily afford spending 5 or 10 dollars a month on a website. hell, you can even see the same thing in dota, you cna access the game for free, but skins (cherry on top) are something you'd never buy, yet the german next door dropped 3000 bucks on virtual cosmetics that give absolutely nothing
and even then you could still put certain stats behind a paywall - the "cosmetics" section for example is not essential for your stats, same goes for the hero rankings, yet it might be appealing to some to buy dotabuff plus for those features
Open dota stats are so much more useful. Particularly the 10mins stats. I don't understand why these stats are not more easily available. Everything else you can get in game. Used to need dotabuff stats for things like hd and td but most of it is in game.
I could think of a ton of useful stats off the top of my head. But I might want to compete with you fools in the future.
The only interesting stats dotabuff offers is the hero meta stats. I dono what else do ppl come here for except that it's most established site and ppl come to whine about normal skill high skill VHS
i always wanted a change in hero rankings page. Professional division should be nerfed or moved to a different ranking page. Coz it doesnt make sense that a player that has 3700 matches and %60 winrate with a certain hero is somehow worse than a player with 130 games just because hes not in a professional team. Hero rankings are filled with professional players that should not even be in top 10000 imo like EG. Crit has 35 matches with visage and has %57 winrate is ranked 72th best visage player...
They should have worked on a "watch thread" feature or some type of notification system, but instead we get this joke of a "feature".
"Hey, check out this cosmetic and the win rate of said cosmetic. Hahahaha!" - Dbuff
Steam discussions is still better than dbuff. Dota client already had almost every bit of info dbuff offers. This place is dying. Honestly if it were not for the NS, HS, VHS info, this place would be a joke.
what i've wanted and i'm pretty sure everyone on the forums would agree is for this forum to be more than just a place to post and reply to topics:
- private messages
- reporting posts
- polls
- notifications
- mentions
- more subforums than just ''general discussion"
you get the idea, the basic features pretty much every forum has.
that's still better for the company
more active users: more money.
and besides, with the level of moderation we have here this place is already worse than reddit.
