yea and for some reason i can't figure out why, but i've won more games on eu west and SEA than on either US servers despite the skill levels in the former 2 being higher (most of the time)

@Dorkly - yes, but only if your refraction is timed perfectly to block the hook. Meld does marginally more damage than Refract, but the first level of Rot doesn't break Refract, which means a first point into Refract to block auto-attacks/hook is a viable option.

Refraction if winning the lane (a lucky hook can change things), Meld if he manages to zone.

I would recommends Boots first against Pudge, with Boots even under Rot you can run at the same speed as him.

@wave stop being a blunt.

@Imperium don't get too worked up over it, just because your MMR is at an all-time low doesn't mean games will magically become easier. You'll still need to work for it, even if you are still sightly more likely to win the game.

Nemesis

i've played all the way from 4300 to 4850 and i feel games at the upper end are easier to win. this has nothing to do with "mmr hell" because i've said already i don't believe people are stuck at ratings, but that ratings can be "sticky" at certain points for some people. i will elaborate more on this point below

there are MUCH fewer games where i have to do 1v5 lifting to win. see my most recent game with PL, i don't even know how the game could have been so hard and had i not played at my best, we would've lost because of shitty 4300 players. on the other hand:

before you say "it's just 1 example," here is a fact: i haven't had a game like this in ages on my lower rated accounts, where all my lanes win and everybody is competent. I'M the one doing the heavy lifting on the lower rated games, because everyone is so awful. And I absolutely hate it because the pressure is on YOU all the time to win. Additionally, supporting at 4800 is much easier because I can buy wards and expect my carries to not die to ganks if people walk through ward vision, among other things.

there's a really good reddit post talking about this phenomenon, i recommend spending about 5 minutes browsing through it.

http://www.reddit.com/r/DotA2/comments/21bo7q/mmr_experiment_update_2/

tl;dr adapting to your teammates' incompetence is one of the "skills" of solo queue pub dota....which means muting everyone and trying to farm as much as possible while avoiding fights. it sucks, we've all been there, and when you carry the game 1v5, your team gets the same MMR as you do.

i will still play on the 4300 account and blog about 4k players' mistakes but don't expect the account to rise anytime soon, i certainly don't. from the looks of it i'd have to play well over 100 games to get to 4800.

meh... drums on ember :/

Nemesis

drums is good on ember, he needs some stats early on so he doesn't get bursted down quickly if flame guard isn't up. the active is good for netting additional kills. almost all 5k+ players on ember get drums.

to add to my long post:

http://dotabuff.com/matches/596911425 (4731 MMR)

1) we didn't have courier/crow till several minutes into the game
2) 0 SUPPORT (check out our funky lanes)

we still win. why? because even though the picks are shit, my allies are competent individually with their heroes. now, if this was 4300 MMR shitters, my team would be incompetent, lose all their lanes, and overall be useless shitfucks and i couldn't be arsed to try and win 1v5, because it's not worth it. i would just be frustrated at their incompetence.

almost... i still quite dislike the current fad around the item right now

i quite like BoT bottle, but i prefer a fast bfury cause i like to stack ancients + flash farm

while leaving a remnant in good positioning for escape/gank/farm/to stack again/etc

Wink

I won a few games and got up to 4020 and then lost because a peruvian instalocked sniper and asked for solo offlane... He went 0-3 in first 10 minutes, and it's not like he was being dived, he was just standing so far up he got caught from behind.

Next game I actually got queued against another ESP member o.O
His team had a roaming SK and a QW Invoker, my team had a french jungling Lycan who had free farm for 15 minutes, never helped push upon request, and didn't do Roshan until 25 minutes. Oh and our Nyx ganked once in the entire game.

Nemesis

mads why would you rush bot? it doesn't increase your dps, and you already have infinite regen with just tp scroll + remnant.

condolences wink, pick a 1v5 hero to maximize ur chances next time. that's the advice i've heard from all the highly rated players and it works better than anything else i've tried. from the looks of it you have no chance of outcarrying ember + tb with invoker past something like 30 minutes. (i don't think any hero can, so your only strategy would be to win your lane and go for pick-offs; if you can't do that, then you'll just have to train ur mechanics to increase your MMR)

i would rush BoT because it saves money on tps and if you snowball you dont need phase anyway, you already have two battlefuries at 18 min so why not ?

and no, i'm not sitting behind my allies doing nothing like what zerrax did in most of his games with tree, i'm actually helping my team win their lanes and shit.

really, the only explanation that's consistent with my experience in ranked MM is what misery said about a very small # of players finding it hard to adapt to shittier players, despite having superior mechanical skills/whatever. this implies:

1) elo hell doesn't exist (agreed, we both went over this many times)
2) adapting to bad players is part of the holistic definition of "skill" (we didn't discuss this at all)

now the question is, HOW do i adapt to these shitty players? Do I just expect them to be shitters right at the start of the game, pick a hero like lycan/antimage and play PvE for 90% of the game? Do I pick something like storm spirit and try to win all 3 lanes?

etc.

Lots of correct answers.

If you're still in doubt, feel free to read some of my earlier blog posts and you'll see my 4300 MMR shitter teammates feeding over and over and I'm literally trying to play 1v5 or 2v5. The images aren't biased since they reflect the actual situation that can be verified by the endscreen stats.

Wait rot lvl 1 doesnt break refraction ? So he is only a problem at lvl 4 right ? Because the thing is at melee range unless you are really good you cant block the hook because you dont know when he is going to hook you.

Zenoth

@Dorkly I just tested it, and I was wrong. I think it worked that way in Dota but not in Dota 2 - Level 1 Rot does exactly 5 damage per 0.2 seconds, and Refract's threshold is 5 damage and above. Salve's threshold however is 20 damage and above, which means you can salve through up to level 3 Rot. Fun fact - if you buy a Cloak, it will prevent Refract from triggering from level 1 Rot (you take 4 damage per tick). Guess I now know why I lost to that Pudge. My apologies for false information.

@Imperium

Solo queue past 5k is also partially knowing roughly how your teammates will play and anticipating it by the picks. There are more tricks now, such as looking at which page your game is on and checking the MMR leaderboards to anticipate which players you should look out for. Take my past 2 games as an example:

Game 1
Page 1 Game 2 (this screenshot was taken later, before that the first game had mister Sam in it)

Before hero picks I checked the position of my game. Being on page 1 usually guarantees an average MMR above 5.2k, so I expected my teammates to be halfway decent. I picked Abbadon to support my first pick Axe, and as expected we raped their defensive trilane and forced their mid to rotate top 5 minutes in to salvage the situation.

Look at the MMR and guess which players did the worst?
Sand King - lowest MMR, jungled a blink but refused to buy wards after he got it, had 3/5 the hero damage of a fucking Abbadon.
Naix - Second lowest MMR, had essentially free farm in safe lane and ended game with less than half the hero damage of a fucking Abbadon.
On the other hand Axe and Tinker were good players and did a good job on their heroes, so even though I made quite a few mistakes on Abbadon we managed to have a relatively easy win (no thanks to SK and Naix).

Boots first and try to whittle his hp down - as long as you can keep his hp at the same number as yours, you don't have anything to fear from him simply walking up with his 285 movespeed. If he got boots first instead of Gauntlet x 2 + Branches, then he won't have enough max HP to trade hits effectively.

After the first few levels it's just a game of not getting hooked - another frustrating experience in itself. Quite a few times I crush the first couple of levels only to get careless for a second and eat a tower hook - GG from there unless you're so far ahead that you can win a point-blank man fight (need at least 2 levels advantage).

People say it like Pudge is the easiest lane ever but they probably have played only against trash pudges (relatively)

Zenoth

Usually safe, but I have ran him mid a few times when someone picked something like Void or Spec after my TB pick. Seems quite decent, although the item build needs to be slightly different and microing illusions to cover runes while laning is a pain in the ass. Laned a Storm once and won the lane, can't remember what else I laned but I traded farm in the worst case scenarios.

sigh, ok so basically in my 4300 shitter games i'm going to have to expect more 1v5's, and in my less shitter 4800 games, i can probably expect more competent allies due to everyone being around 4600-5000 MMR (i can cancel search after it goes beyond 2 min like relentless suggested to get tighter MMR queues)

ty for the tip, but for my bracket i don't think i'll solo queue into anything beyond page 9 or 10 most of my games.

Nemesis

coz i get in many games against 5k+ players and the purpose of this blog is to help out all the 4k shitters. only a small % of the 4k shitters near the top (4700-4999) get the privilege of playing with 5k players often (all my games today at 4800 had 5k players), the rest typically play amongst their own +/- 300 range. watch the games on my 4300 account and you'll see the difference in skill level. they are all awful (and to a certain extent so am i, but i'm much closer to 5000).

what's the typical strategy you use to try and maximize your chances of winning

cartographer

zenoth i don't think it matters, they were just running into the enemy over and over and feeding storm. i didn't even look at what they were doing, it was 2 or 3 people running into 4 on the minimap. i could've picked something like clinkz offlane, i suppose. this is one of those games where i feel like i HAD to go mid or safelane to make enough impact and win. a strong offlaner like phoenix can suppress spectre's farm for the first few minutes, but then what?

lion didn't hex storm more than 5 times that entire game, i don't think venge used spells much at all, the jugg was just retarded (one time he tried to bladefury into a storm with full mana + orchid...ROFL), and invoker just sucked (look at those item choices WHERE IS THE HEX FOR STORM/SPECTRE???!!) probably because of his inflated mmr from picking that hero over and over as most invoker pickers sitting near 5k tend to be trash. i assume this is because their real mmr is around 4500 (+500 inflated rating) and thus their mechanics/laning/awareness is just overall going to be poorer compared to a real 4900/5000 player. same with lycan pickers. anyways it doesn't matter, i have them all muted and i'm dodging the fuck out of these idiots if i see them on my team next time. i muted about 12 people today, i didn't think i would have decent allies yesterday and the next day get retards in more than half of my games.

interestingly enough i've devised a solution

i had a game earlier when someone on my team randomed shadow fiend, and the first thought that came into my head was "dear god, another randomer who's probably going to be shit with his hero." and alas i was correct, he's a sub 50% win rate shitter who massed invoker/prophet/windrunner and wants to go mid on a hero he rarely plays and lost mid badly.

i just threw the game and went ancients drow to make the game end more quickly, i'm not going to support people who refuse to play seriously in ranked games by randoming heroes they clearly can't play. i'm not going to say that game was "unwinnable" but basically a 4800 MMR player would be extremely unlikely to make enough of a difference to win. I'd have to be 5500 MMR or something, which I'm not.

(basically trying to maximize mmr gain with whatever morale i have, i don't have an infinite supply on any given day)
